How to train inside dog to stay outside?
filed in Pets on Jan.22, 2010
Our family adopted a 1 year old Australian Shepherd, he use to be an inside dog, but the owner couldn’t take care of him because of her age. Now we want to know how to train him to live outside.

You may need to train the dog to be inside/outside since he’s been an inside dog so long. My Aussie is outside all day, but comes inside at night to be my inside guardian to keep me safe.
Please remember that Aussies are high energy dogs and you need to give him enough exercise. They LIVE to RUN! They LOVE to RUN!
Give him enough toys to keep him entertained and busy outside. Make time to play with him and run with him. If you give him enough exercise, he’ll do fine outside all day.
AND… you must provide him with shelter and water available at all times. Either buy or build him a doghouse to get out of bad weather or hot sun. He should be fine outside all day. As to night time… a lot depends on whether barking might distress your neighbors or not. Most dogs, esp. working dogs, will tend to bark at night to ward off predators and Aussies can be somewhat nervous dogs and bark unnecessarily at times at night. You can lessen this by lighting the yard really well.
Good luck. It may take some time to get him to be an outside dog 100% of the time, unless you buy a goat or two for him to herd. -!-

You don’t. Dogs should be inside pets. If you can’t have him inside, you need to find him a home where he can.

Why do you have a Dog if you dont let them in the House?

First, I have a question for you. Why do you have a dog if you don’t want to spend time with it?
Now, I moved into a place a while ago where the owner of the house basically kept his dogs outside the vast majority of the time. My dog is an inside dog. I needed to have him be comfortable outside, so he could spend more but not all of his time out there. I just had to put him out and leave him there until he realized that he was not coming in. It took a couple of nights of basically no sleep, but he learned that being outside alone was not the end of the world. Once he figured that out, I was brought him inside when one of were home, but I still kept him outside when there wasn’t anyone there.

You should not have taken this dog if you are not prepared to keep him inside the house. He is obviously a house dog, not a yard dog.
He will feel totally abandoned and miserable if you leave him outside.
He will already be feeling lost and alone since he has been separated from his owner.
If you are unwilling to keep him inside with the family then find someone to take him who is looking for a house dog and able to provide for the needs of the dog.
Rehome the dog.

For gods sake, you think dogs were created to live indoors with central heating and double glazed windows??? Dogs are outdoor animals by nature and there is no good reason to have a dog live it’s live indoors unless you’re living in siberia and own a short hair chihuahua!
Because of her age and habits you will have to progress slowly. Let the dog outside for a few hours at a time during the day, gradually increase this over the week. By the time the week is over you should be able to have your dog outside during the day except when you’re walking, training it. Having a dog outside during the night is the same thing, it is really a personal decision if you feel comfortable enough leaving the dog outside where no one can get to the dog and depending on whether or not he barks.
<<Besides, it’s not that dogs can’t survive outside; it’s just that they don’t thrive outside.>> : Evidence/Reliable sources to back that up other than humanized opinions??
All my dogs have thrived outside. Well fed, well trained, well socialized, get more exercise than the majority of dogs i know, no behavior issues, no anxiety, no unwarranted barking or whining and all in excellent health.
What part of that would you consider to be not thriving?

<<<For gods sake, you think dogs were created to live indoors with central heating and double glazed windows???>>>
Man wasn’t created to live indoors with central air or heat anymore than a dog was. . . or did you think central air evolved alongside man?
Besides, it’s not that dogs can’t survive outside; it’s just that they don’t thrive outside. Man created the dog breeds we have today to be so bonded to humans that they should not be left outside alone especially when they were raised inside. I think it is cruel. . . or at least it would be cruel to a dog who is bonded to his owner.
